Pirate coins facts for kids
Pirate coins are a fun type of candy that tastes like salty liquorice. They are very popular in Europe, especially in countries like Finland, Sweden, and Denmark (these are called the Nordic countries).
These candies look like old coins. They often have cool pictures on them, like guns, skull and crossbones (the pirate flag!), and even parrots. These are all things we think of when we imagine pirates!
Two big candy companies, Fazer from Finland and Haribo from Germany and Denmark, make pirate coins.
Who Makes Pirate Coins?
Haribo's Piratos
The candy company Haribo started making their pirate coins, called Piratos, in 1955. They were first created in Denmark. The idea came from the traditional salty liquorice candies popular in Scandinavian countries.
Even today, Haribo's Piratos are still made in their factory in Denmark. They are super popular there! You can find them almost everywhere, like in supermarkets, small shops, gas stations, movie theaters, and even vending machines.
Haribo makes two main kinds of pirate coins: Piratos and Super Piratos. Super Piratos have a bit more of a special ingredient called ammonium chloride. This ingredient makes them taste even saltier! Both kinds come in small and large bags.
Fazer's Pirate Coins
The Finnish candy company Fazer started making their pirate coins in the 1970s. When they first came out, these candies were quite big.
Because of their large size, there was a worry that small children might have trouble eating them. So, in February 2013, Fazer brought back their pirate coins, but they made them smaller and safer for everyone to enjoy.
Fazer's pirate coins also come in different fruit flavors, not just salty liquorice!
