Pirouline is a popular brand of yummy, rolled wafer cookies. These cookies are filled with a creamy center and are sold in the United States by the DeBeukelaer Corporation.

Pirouline cookies were first created in 1984 by Peter DeBeukelaer. They look a lot like Caprice Papadopoulou Wafers, which were made in Greece a few years earlier in 1978. Pirouline cookies are special because they are toasted, rolled into a tube, and filled with a delicious cream. They also have a cool swirled stripe on the outside. You usually find them sold in a round metal tin. These tasty cookies are made in a big baking factory that is about 115,000 square feet in size, and more than 200 people work there!

History of Pirouline

The story of Pirouline cookies began a long time ago.

Early Beginnings

Around 1860, the DeBeukelaer family started making biscuits in Belgium. Their company, the 1st Biscuit and Wafer Co., says they were the first to invent the rolled wafer cookie.

Growing the Business

In 1978, Peter DeBeukelaer, who was a descendant of the original family in Belgium, started his own company called DBC Corporation. It was also known as DeBeukelaer Corporation or the DeBeukelaer Cookie Co. In the same year, the company officially protected the unique swirled design on their cookies, calling it the Pirouline Swirl.

In 1984, DeBeukelaer opened a cookie factory in Madison, Mississippi, just to make Pirouline cookies. Later, in 1993, they introduced a new version of the cookie that was filled with cream. These cream-filled cookies were served in special tins.

To help the environment and make sure they always had enough tins, the company started making their own tin cans in 2001. This meant they didn't have to ship cans from other suppliers. In 2007, they opened an even bigger factory and warehouse, about 100,000 square feet, to make even more cookies. By 2009, Pirouline started packaging their cookies in a smaller 3.25 ounce tin can.

Different Kinds of Pirouline

The very first Pirouline cookie was a hollow, rolled wafer with the famous Pirouline Swirl, and it had chocolate lining the inside. In 1993, they introduced a new version called Crème de Pirouline, which was filled with a chocolate hazelnut cream.

Over the years, Pirouline has made other cream flavors too! These include vanilla, strawberry, pumpkin spice, and dulce de leche (which is a sweet caramel-like cream). The original chocolate-lined cookies are always sold in boxes. However, the cream-filled ones can be found in tins or cartons. Today, Pirouline makes many different kinds of special cookies. You can find them in grocery stores and specialty food shops all over the country and even in other parts of the world.
