Pisba (sometimes spelled Pisva) is a small town and a municipality in the Boyacá Department of Colombia. It is part of the La Libertad Province region. Pisba is located high in the Eastern Ranges of the Colombian Andes mountains. Its elevation ranges from about 2,400 meters (7,874 feet) to 3,500 meters (11,483 feet) above sea level.

Pisba is about 128 kilometers (80 miles) from Sogamoso and 176 kilometers (109 miles) from Tunja. It shares borders with Paya to the east, Labranzagrande to the south, and Mongua to the northwest. To the north, Pisba borders Támara in the Casanare Department.

A Look at Pisba's Past

Pisba is in the eastern part of Boyacá. This area was once home to different groups of people. The Muisca lived in the Altiplano Cundiboyacense region. Their lands bordered the U'wa to the north and the Achagua to the east.

What Does the Name Pisba Mean?

The name "Pisba" comes from the Chibcha language. This was the language spoken by the Muisca people. In their language, Pisba means "Honourable domain from before."

Life Before the Spanish Arrived

When the Spanish first came to this area, the Muisca people were known for their hard work in farming. They grew many important crops. These included maize (corn), yuca, and bananas. They also grew a lot of cotton. Pisba was under the rule of the iraca (a type of spiritual leader or ruler) from Sugamuxi.
