About Pistyll Rhaeadr
Pistyll Rhaeadr is formed by the Afon Disgynfa river. It falls in three main sections over a tall, rocky cliff. The total height of the waterfall is about 240 feet (73 meters). The tallest single drop is around 40 meters (130 feet) high. After the water falls, the river changes its name to the Afon Rhaeadr.
What Makes It Special?
Pistyll Rhaeadr is considered one of the Seven Wonders of Wales. This means it is a very famous and important natural site. It is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest. This title is given to places that have special plants, animals, or geology.
Many people have been amazed by this waterfall. A writer named George Borrow visited in the 1800s. He wrote that the waterfall looked like "an immense skein of silk" or "the long tail of a grey courser at furious speed." He thought the water fell "so gracefully, so much like thin, beautiful threads."
Is It the Tallest Waterfall?
You might hear that Pistyll Rhaeadr is the tallest waterfall in Wales or the United Kingdom. However, it is important to know that it falls in three parts, not as one single drop. Other waterfalls, like the Devil's Appendix and Pistyll y Llyn, are actually taller in total height or have taller single drops.
Visiting the Waterfall
If you want to see Pistyll Rhaeadr, there is a car park right near the bottom of the waterfall. This makes it easy for visitors to explore the area. You can also find a café and a place to stay (a B&B) right next to the waterfall. It is a great spot for a day trip or a short stay.
