Skiing and Snowshoeing Trails
If you love winter sports, Plain is a fantastic place to visit. It has the Plain Valley Ski Trails, which is a big network of paths. These trails are about 25 kilometers long. You can use them for cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. Cross-country skiing is like regular skiing but on flatter terrain. Snowshoeing lets you walk on top of deep snow.
A special team called the Plain Valley Nordic Team also trains here. They practice for races and competitions.
Plain Endurance Runs
Plain is also the starting and finishing point for some very tough races. These are called the Plain Endurance Runs. They are ultramarathon races, which means they are much longer than a regular marathon. Runners can choose between a 100-mile or a 100-kilometer race. These races started in 1997.
The Plain Endurance Runs are known for being very challenging. Runners are not allowed to have pacers (people who run with them to help keep a certain speed). There are also no course markings to show the way, and no aid stations to provide water or snacks. Because of these tough rules, very few people finished the 100-mile race in its first eight years.
