Pleasant Ridge, also known as Ridge, is a small place in Greene County, Alabama, United States. It is an unincorporated community. This means it is a settlement that does not have its own local government.

Pleasant Ridge is located on Alabama State Route 14. It is about 17.2 miles (27.7 km) northwest of a town called Eutaw.

History of Pleasant Ridge

Early Days and Post Office

A post office served the community of Pleasant Ridge for many years. It was open from 1825 until 1918. This post office helped people send and receive mail.

Civil War Skirmish

Pleasant Ridge was the site of a small battle during the American Civil War. This happened on April 6, 1865. It was just a few days before the war ended.

Who Fought in the Skirmish

The battle was between soldiers from the Union Army and the Confederate States Army. The Union forces were led by Brigadier General John T. Croxton. A brigadier general is a high-ranking army officer. The Confederate forces were led by Brigadier-General William Wirt Adams.

Events of the Skirmish

General Croxton's Union troops were leaving Tuscaloosa. They had burned the University of Alabama a few days earlier. Two Union cavalry groups, the 6th Kentucky Cavalry Regiment and the 2nd Michigan Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, fought Adams's Confederate soldiers.

Results of the Skirmish

The fighting resulted in casualties for both sides. The Union Army had three soldiers killed, eight wounded, and sixty-eight captured. The Confederate forces had nine soldiers killed, twenty-five wounded, and one captured.
