Plectreurys tristis is a type of venomous spider. People often call them primitive hunting spiders. They belong to a spider family called plectreurids. These spiders make a special liquid called venom. This venom has tiny parts called plectoxins, which can act like an insect killer. You can find Plectreurys tristis in western North America, Central America, and Mexico.

What Does Plectreurys tristis Look Like?
Plectreurys tristis are quite large spiders. An adult male spider's body can be about 12 millimeters (half an inch) long. With its legs stretched out, it can reach about 25 millimeters (one inch). Female spiders are even bigger than the males.
Their main body part, called the cephalothorax, and their legs are dark brown. They do not have any special marks. Unlike some other spiders, their legs are strong and very hairy. However, they do not have long spines. The spider's outer shell, called the carapace, feels rough.
Their abdomen, which is the back part of their body, is almost round. It is usually yellowish-grey in color. These spiders have eight eyes. Their eyes are set up in two rows.
Where Do These Spiders Live and What Do They Do?
Plectreurys tristis spiders live in dry and partly dry areas. You can find them in the southwestern parts of North America. This includes places like California, Nevada, Idaho, Arizona, and Utah. They have also been seen in Central America and Mexico.
They live in deserts, dry forests, and pine forests. They can be found up to 2,000 meters (about 6,500 feet) high. These spiders build their webs under rocks, pieces of wood, and other things found in their dry homes. They can also move into cities. There, they build webs in many convenient spots.
Usually, only the female spiders and young spiders stay in their webs. Adult male spiders often wander around, especially at night. These spiders do not see very well, even when they are hunting. However, their venom is strong. It helps them kill or paralyze other arachnids.
Understanding Plectreurys tristis Venom
The venom from Plectreurys tristis spiders has many complex chemicals. This venom can block certain signals in the body. It specifically affects how some nerves work.
Scientists have found about 50 different tiny protein parts in the venom. The most active of these are called plectoxins. These plectoxins are very good at killing moths and butterflies. This is why they are known for their insect-killing abilities.
What Happens if a Human is Bitten?
The first time a human was bitten by Plectreurys tristis was reported in 1991. A 15-year-old boy was bitten on his leg in Kern County, California.
Right after the bite, he felt strong pain. His leg also swelled up and looked pale. After about 15 to 30 minutes, his leg felt numb. This numbness lasted for about an hour. Then, the numb feeling slowly went away. After two hours, all his symptoms were gone. He did not need any medical help. This shows that while the bite can cause some discomfort, the effects are usually temporary.
