Scientific classification
Genus:
Poecilus
Species:
baeticus

The Poecilus baeticus is a fascinating type of ground beetle. It belongs to a large family of beetles called Carabidae. You can find this specific beetle living in two countries: Spain and Morocco.

What is a Ground Beetle?

Ground beetles are a huge group of insects, with over 40,000 different species found all over the world! They are usually dark-colored, like black or brown, and many of them have shiny, metallic bodies. Most ground beetles are nocturnal, meaning they are active at night. They are often found on the ground, hiding under rocks, logs, or leaves during the day.

These beetles are very important in their ecosystems because they are mostly predators. This means they hunt and eat other small insects, slugs, and snails. Some even eat seeds. Their strong jaws help them catch and chew their food.

Where Poecilus baeticus Lives

The Poecilus baeticus beetle makes its home in parts of Spain, which is in Southern Europe, and Morocco, a country in North Africa. These regions have warm climates, which are suitable for many insect species. Beetles like this one often live in places with soil and plants, where they can find food and shelter.

Subspecies of Poecilus baeticus

Sometimes, animals of the same species can have slight differences depending on where they live. These variations are called subspecies. The Poecilus baeticus has two known subspecies:

  • Poecilus baeticus baeticus (Rambur, 1838): This subspecies is found in Spain.
  • Poecilus baeticus gharbensis (Alluaud, 1927): This subspecies is found in Morocco.

Even though they are slightly different, both subspecies are still part of the same Poecilus baeticus species. It's like different breeds of dogs; they are all dogs, but they look a bit different!
