Pogogyne is a special group of flowering plants often called mesamints or mesa mints. These plants are part of the mint family. You can find them growing naturally in parts of Oregon, Idaho, California, and Baja California (which is in Mexico).

What Are Mesamints?

Mesamints are small plants that live for only one year. This means they are annual plants. They have leaves that feel a bit sticky and smell like mint. This minty smell comes from special glands on their leaves.

These plants can look a little different from one another. But most mesamints are herbs with a minty scent. Their leaves and the parts around their flowers have stiff hairs. The flowers themselves can be white, purple, or a pretty pinkish-lavender color.

Important Mesamint Species

One of the most well-known mesamint species is the San Diego mesa mint. This plant is critically endangered. This means there are very few of them left in the wild. The San Diego mesa mint is now found only in a few small areas near San Diego, California. It grows in special wet areas called vernal pools.

Here are some of the different types of mesamint plants:

  • Pogogyne abramsii - San Diego mesa mint: Found in San Diego County, California.
  • Pogogyne clareana - Santa Lucia mesa mint: Grows in Monterey County, California.
  • Pogogyne douglasii - Douglas' mesa mint: Found in central and northern California.
  • Pogogyne floribunda - Profuseflower mesa mint: Grows in northern California, southern Oregon, and southwestern Idaho.
  • Pogogyne nudiuscula - Otay mesa mint: Found in San Diego County, California, and northern Baja California.
  • Pogogyne serpylloides - Thymeleaf mesa mint: Grows in California and Baja California.
  • Pogogyne zizyphoroides - Sacramento mesa mint: Found in northern and central California, and southwestern Oregon.
