Point of Rocks is a special rocky point of a mountain range. It sticks out into the Mojave River in San Bernardino County, California. This mountain range runs from south to north. A Historic Stop on Old Trails

Point of Rocks was a very important landmark for travelers long ago. It helped people find their way on famous routes like the Mojave Trail, the Old Spanish Trail, and the Mormon Road. These trails all followed the path of the Mojave River.

Why Point of Rocks Was Important

This spot was special because the Mojave River would often appear above ground here. This meant fresh water was available! The area around Point of Rocks had green grasslands, wet marshes, and lots of cottonwood and willow trees. This made it a perfect place for travelers to stop and rest. They could find water for themselves and their animals. It was a safe and comfortable camping spot along the long journeys.

First Settlers at Point of Rocks

In 1863, a family named Nicholson became the first people to settle in the area around Point of Rocks. They chose this spot likely because of the reliable water and good land.

Modern Changes to the Landscape

Over time, new ways of travel came to the area. When the railroad was built along the river, engineers had to make a cut right through Point of Rocks. This allowed the trains to pass through the mountain. Later, car roads were built. These roads went around the mountain to the east, near Helendale, to avoid the rocky point.
