Pokémon Unite is a fun, free-to-play video game where you team up with other players. It's a type of game called a MOBA. This game was made by TiMi Studio Group and published by The Pokémon Company. You can play it on Android phones, iOS devices like iPhones, and the Nintendo Switch.
The game was first announced in June 2020. It came out for Nintendo Switch on July 21, 2021. Then, it was released for Android and iOS devices in many countries on September 22, 2021. By August 2022, over 80 million people had downloaded Pokémon Unite!

How to Play Pokémon Unite
Pokémon Unite is a game where two teams battle each other. Each team has 5 players. Most matches last for 10 minutes. The team with the most points when time runs out wins the game.
- A team can also win if the other team gives up.
- Players can only surrender after half the match is over.
- Most players on the team must agree to surrender.
- If both teams have the same score, the team that reached that score first wins.
There are also special maps and a game mode called Quick Battle. Quick Battle games are shorter, lasting only five minutes. They have different maps and sometimes different rules or wild Pokémon.
Becoming Stronger in the Game
When you start a match, your Pokémon is not very strong. To make your Pokémon stronger and learn new moves, you need to do a few things:
- Catch wild Pokémon on the map.
- Help your teammates defeat wild Pokémon.
- Knock out Pokémon controlled by enemy players.
Unlike other Pokémon games, Pokémon Unite does not use the "type" system. This means a Fire-type Pokémon isn't automatically stronger or weaker against a Water-type.
Unite Moves
A special feature in Pokémon Unite is called "Unite Moves." These are powerful moves unique to each Pokémon. They are like "Ultimate moves" in other MOBA games. Your Pokémon unlocks its Unite Move at a certain level during the match. As of April 2023, there are 52 different Pokémon you can play as in the game!
No Scoreboard?
Pokémon Unite is different from many other MOBA games because it doesn't show an in-game scoreboard. This means you can't see the exact score during the match. The creators did this to help players stay focused and not get too upset if their team is losing. It encourages everyone to keep trying until the very end!
Making the Game: Development
The game was developed by TiMi Studio Group, a company from China. Before the game was fully released, they did some tests.
- In January 2021, they held a "closed beta test" in China. Only a few selected players could try it out.
- In February 2021, The Pokémon Company announced another test for March 2021. This one was for Android users in Canada.
When Pokémon Unite was first announced, it got a lot of attention. Some people were very excited about it. They thought it could bring a new type of competitive gaming to many players.
The Nintendo Switch version of the game came out on July 21, 2021. The mobile versions for iOS and Android were released on September 22, 2021. TiMi plans to keep adding new things to the game, like new Pokémon you can play as. These new Pokémon are available as "downloadable content" (DLC). The first new Pokémon was added on July 28, 2021.
Pokémon Unite in Esports
Esports are organized video game competitions. In January 2022, it was announced that Pokémon Unite would be part of the Pokémon World Championships. This is a big event held every August where players compete in different Pokémon games.
Tournament Mode
The game's producer, Masaaki Hoshino, said they were working on a special "tournament mode." In this mode, all players would have an equal chance to win, no matter what items they had. This tournament mode was released on January 20, 2022.
Pokémon Unite was also used in other tournaments, like the AKB48 Group Invitational. This was part of a bigger online event called the Pokémon Battle Festival Asia.
Championship Series
For the first Pokémon Unite Championship Series, there were 11 different regions around the world. Players usually need to be 16 or 18 years old to join, depending on their region.
Throughout the year, tournaments are held in each region. Teams earn "championship points" (CP) from these tournaments. These points help teams qualify for bigger events.
The top 8 teams with the most CP from each region qualify for the Regional Championships. These championships start with teams playing in groups. Then, the best teams move on to a "double-elimination tournament" to find the winners. The top teams from the Regional Championships get to go to the World Championships!
In August 2022, an American team called BLVKHVND won the very first Pokémon Unite Championship Series title in London.
