Pola de Siero, also known as La Pola, is a lively town in Asturias, a region on the northern coast of Spain. It is the main town of the Siero area. Pola de Siero is located in the middle of Asturias. It is about 16 kilometers east of Oviedo, which is the capital city of the region. It is also 16 kilometers south of Gijón, a major port city.
The Siero area shares borders with several other towns. To the north, it borders Gijón. To the south, it borders Langreo and San Martín del Rey Aurelio. To the west, it borders Llanera and Oviedo. To the east, it borders Sariego, Nava, and Bimenes. The town of Noreña is completely surrounded by Siero. Siero also touches Villaviciosa at a special spot called La Peña de los Cuatro Jueces (The Mount of the Four Judges).
According to official numbers from 2011, Pola de Siero has a population of 12,615 people. This makes it the largest town in the Siero area. It is also the seventh largest population center in all of Asturias.
How Pola de Siero Started
Pola de Siero was officially founded a long time ago. This happened in 1270, thanks to a special document from King Alfonso X. Before the town was created, there was a simple guesthouse in this spot. This guesthouse offered a place to stay and food for travelers. These travelers were pilgrims walking the famous Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago). They were on their way to or from Santiago de Compostela, a very important religious site.
The Weekly Market
The document from King Alfonso X allowed the town to form. It also set up a yearly tax for the people living there, which they paid to the king. Most importantly, it gave them permission to hold a weekly market. This market took place in the town square, known as Plaza les Campes.
This market was a huge deal for Pola de Siero. It helped the town grow and become important. The market still happens every Tuesday, even today! Because of the market, the town became a central spot for a large farming area. Soon, other businesses and government offices also started to appear there.
