Langreo (pronounced lan-GREH-oh) or Llangréu (in Asturian) is a town and municipality in northern Spain. It is located in the region of Asturias. Langreo is the 4th largest town in Asturias, with about 43,000 people living there. It is in the center of Asturias, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) south-east of Oviedo.

In the past, Langreo was a very important place for mining and making metal products. Today, people still grow fruit and make cider in the area. There are also coal mines, metal factories, and places that make rough cloth.

History of Langreo

A legend says that Langreo was where the Moorish governor Munuza was killed. This happened when he tried to escape from Asturias at the start of the Reconquest. The Romans also lived in Langreo a long time ago. They built a large Roman bridge, but it is not there anymore.

Since the 1700s, Langreo became one of the most important places in Spain for mining and making iron. It was also known for its workers' movements and lively cultural scene. The FC of Langreo was the third railway ever built in Spain and Portugal. The Factory of La Felguera was a very important ironworks center. The mines in Langreo were famous across the country.

Later, Spain went through an "Industrial Restructuring." This meant that Langreo lost some of its industrial importance. However, today, the town is home to Bayer. This company makes 100% of the acetylsalicylic acid (like aspirin) for the German company right here. Langreo also has a technology center called Valnalón.

Langreo has many historic buildings. These include the church of San Esteban, the Quintana Tower, and the Sanctuary of Carbayu. The town also has good examples of its industrial past. You can visit the Siderurgy Museum Of Asturias inside the old Felguera Factory. There is also the Samuño Valley and Railway Mining Museum, and the Pinacoteca Eduardo Úrculo art gallery.

Langreo celebrates fun festivals like San Pedro and Santiago. They also have special food days: Carnival in February, Cider in April, and Fabada (a bean stew) in December.

The largest part of Langreo is formed by its main districts. These include La Felguera (with about 20,000 people), Sama (with about 10,000 people), and Riaño, Ciaño, Lada, and Barros. These are also known as parishes.

Langreo is divided into eight main areas called parishes. These are listed by how many people live in them:

  • La Felguera
  • Sama
  • Riaño
  • Ciaño
