History of Poland, Indiana
The first business in Poland was a blacksmith shop. It was opened by James A. Poland in 1839. A few years later, in 1841, a person named J.B. Nees had an idea to start a town here. He talked to three other landowners, and they all agreed to set aside some of their land. That's how the community of Poland began! The Poland post office was officially opened in 1846.
A Modern-Day Ark?
In 2008, Poland became famous for a very unusual project. A man named Tom West and his wife, Marsha, started building a huge boat. It was 57-foot (17 m) long and weighed 33 tons! They built this stainless steel sailboat on an old tennis court next to their house.
Tom West was a former tennis coach and farmer. He had several college degrees, including one in astrophysics. He planned for the boat's inside to be 6.5 feet (2.0 m) tall and about 600 square feet (56 m2), which is like a small apartment. He wanted to include a kitchen, sleeping areas for 12 people, two bathrooms, a lounge, and a navigation center. Tom even designed the boat to be safe from pirates, with strong steel doors and special locks. After finishing the boat, Tom and Marsha planned to launch it in Kentucky Lake. From there, they hoped to travel through the Tombigbee waterway to the Gulf of Mexico and then explore the world!

The lake is also home to the beautiful Cataract Falls. These waterfalls were formed by ancient rock ridges that were buried under old lake sediments.
