Polina Sergeyevna Shmatko (born March 26, 2003, in Moscow, Russia) is a talented Russian rhythmic gymnast. She became a champion at the 2016 European Junior Championships in Clubs and Ball events. She also won the Hoop event at the 2018 European Junior Championships. Polina was part of the gold-winning team at the 2018 European Championships. At a national level, she earned a silver medal in the all-around competition at the 2016 Russian Junior Championships. Polina later retired from gymnastics due to health concerns.

Polina's Gymnastics Journey

Starting as a Junior

Polina Shmatko first showed her skills in 2012 at the Miss Valentine competition in Estonia. She later won the all-around gold medal at the 2015 Hope of Russia, a big competition in Russian rhythmic gymnastics.

Junior Competitions in 2016

In 2016, Polina began competing in the Junior Grand Prix series. At the Alina Cup, she won a gold medal for Team Russia with Alina Ermolova. She also won gold in the ball event.

Polina then competed at the Lisboa Junior World Cup. Here, she helped her team win gold alongside Daria Pridannikova. She also won gold in ball, silver in hoop, and placed well in other events.

She earned a silver medal in the all-around at the 2016 Russian Junior Championships. At the 2016 Junior Grand Prix Brno, Team Russia won silver. Polina also won silver in ball and bronze in clubs.

At the Junior World Cup in Sofia, Polina won team gold. She was chosen to compete at the 2016 European Junior Championships. There, she won team gold again with Alina Ermolova and Maria Sergeeva. Polina also won gold medals in both the ball and clubs finals, setting a junior record score.

Junior Competitions in 2017

Polina started her 2017 season at the Junior Grand Prix Moscow. She finished fourth in the all-around competition. At the International Tournament of Lisbon, she won a bronze medal in the all-around.

At the Junior Grand Prix Marbella, Polina finished fourth all-around. She also won gold in the team event with Lala Kramarenko. She competed at the Happy Caravan Cup in Tashkent, winning team gold. She also took gold in clubs and silver in ball.

In May, Polina competed at the Sofia Junior World Cup. She won a silver medal in the all-around, finishing behind her teammate Lala Kramarenko. Later in October, Polina won a bronze medal in the all-around at the "2017 Hope of Russia" competition.

Junior Competitions in 2018 and Retirement

In 2018, Polina had a toe injury and had to miss the Junior Grand Prix Moscow. She returned to competition in April at the MTM Ljubljana tournament. She won bronze in the all-around and silver in the hoop and ball finals.

In May, at the 2018 Junior World Cup Guadalajara, she won gold in the team event and hoop. She also won a bronze medal with clubs. Her next event was the Junior Grand Prix Holon. Here, she won three gold medals: in team, hoop, and clubs.

Polina was chosen for the 2018 Rhythmic Gymnastics European Championships in Guadalajara, Spain. She won team gold with Lala Kramarenko, Daria Trubnikova, and Anastasia Sergeeva. She also won the hoop final with her best score ever of 18.825.

After these championships, Polina announced she would take a break from gymnastics. This was due to health issues with her back. She officially retired from the sport in 2019.
