Poll Islet, also known as Guijar or Poll Island, is a small Australian island. It is found in the middle of the Torres Strait Islands. This strait is a waterway between Australia and Papua New Guinea. Poll Islet is part of a group of islands called The Three Sisters.
The island is located about 5.2 kilometers (3.2 miles) south of Sue Island. Sue Island is the only island in The Three Sisters group where people live. Poll Islet itself is uninhabited, which means no one lives there. It is part of the Guijar Islet area in the Torres Strait Island Region.
About Poll Islet
Poll Islet is a very small island. It has a total surface area of about 11 hectares. To give you an idea, 11 hectares is roughly the size of 11 international rugby fields. The island is surrounded by a special natural feature.
The Poll Islet Reef
Around Poll Islet, there is a large, oval-shaped coral reef. This reef is known as the Poll Islet Reef. It covers an area of about 5 square kilometers (1.9 square miles). Coral reefs are like underwater cities. They are made of tiny animals called polyps. These polyps build hard, stony skeletons. Over time, these skeletons create large structures.
Coral reefs are very important for the ocean. They provide homes and food for many different kinds of sea creatures. This includes colorful fish, crabs, and other marine life. The Poll Islet Reef helps to support the local ocean environment.
