Different Types of Andalusian Anomalous Blue
Within the Polyommatus violetae species, there are two slightly different groups called subspecies. Think of them like different versions of the same butterfly, each with its own specific home and food.
The Polyommatus violetae violetae
This subspecies was first described in 1979. It lives in the Sierra de Almijara mountains, which are in the southeastern part of the Málaga province in southern Andalusia, Spain. The caterpillars of this butterfly love to eat a plant called Onobrychis argentea argentea.
The Polyommatus violetae subbaeticus
This second subspecies was identified in 2005. Its home is in the Sierra de la Sagra mountains, located in the northern part of the Granada province, in southeastern Spain. The caterpillars of this group feed on a slightly different plant, Onobrychis argentea hispanica. Scientists used special tests to confirm that this subspecies is indeed a part of the Polyommatus violetae family.
