Pomona is a small, quiet place in Yakima County, Washington, in the United States. It's known as an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's managed by the county. Pomona is located right next to Selah.

A Name Change for a Special Place

Pomona has an interesting history, especially when it comes to its name! Back in 1885, there was a train station here on the Northern Pacific Railway line. It was originally called Selah.

Why the Name Pomona?

The name of the train station was changed to Pomona in 1908. This happened because another nearby station, called Wenas, was often mistakenly called Selah. To avoid confusion, a man named Edmund Stevens, who worked for the Northern Pacific Railway, suggested a new name.

He chose "Pomona" to honor a special figure from ancient Roman stories. Pomona was the Roman goddess of gardens, fruit trees, and orchards. This name was a perfect fit for an area known for its rich farmlands and fruit production.
