Ponemah is a small community located in Beltrami County, Minnesota, United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area that looks like a town but isn't officially set up as one with its own local government. The name Ponemah comes from the Ojibwe language, where it means "later on" or "afterwards." In Ojibwe, the community is called Obaashiing, which means "At the narrows."
History of Ponemah
The name "Ponemah" comes from the Ojibwe word baanimaa. This word means "later on" or "afterwards." It was used in a famous poem called "The Song of Hiawatha."
A post office has been open in Ponemah since 1901. Long ago, there was also a government school in Ponemah for Ojibwe children.

Ponemah is located in the Lower Red Lake area of Beltrami County, Minnesota. The community covers an area of about 11 square miles (28.37 square kilometers). All of this area is land, with no large bodies of water inside the CDP.

According to the 2020 census, 599 people live in Ponemah. The population has changed over the years:

Ponemah is special because almost all of its residents are Native American. In fact, it has one of the highest percentages of Native American residents of any census-designated place in the United States.
In 2000, there were 209 households in Ponemah. Many households (51.2%) had children under 18 living with them. The average household had about four people. The community has a young population, with nearly half (49.5%) of the people being under 18 years old. The average age in Ponemah was 18 years.
