Pontus Wernbloom (born on June 25, 1986) is a Swedish former professional footballer. He played as a midfielder, known for his strong and fearless style. Pontus started his professional career with IFK Göteborg in 2005. He then played for clubs like AZ in the Netherlands, CSKA Moscow in Russia, and PAOK in Greece. He finished his career back at IFK Göteborg in 2021.
Pontus also played for the Swedish national team from 2007 to 2016. He played in 51 international matches and was part of the Swedish team for the UEFA Euro 2012 and 2016 tournaments.

Starting at IFK Göteborg
Pontus began his football journey at a local club called IK Kongahälla. In 2004, he joined the youth team of IFK Göteborg, one of Sweden's biggest clubs. By 2005, he was playing for their main team. He quickly became known for his strong and fearless way of playing. When a key player, Håkan Mild, retired in 2005, Pontus earned a regular spot in the starting lineup. Later, he even played as a forward for a while.
Moving to AZ in the Netherlands
In April 2009, Pontus signed a contract with the Dutch club AZ. He played his first game in the Eredivisie (the top Dutch league) on August 2, 2009. He scored his first goal for AZ in February 2010. Pontus also helped AZ qualify for the group stage of the 2010–11 UEFA Europa League by scoring important goals.
Success with CSKA Moscow
In January 2012, Pontus moved to Russia to play for CSKA Moscow. This was a big step in his career. Early on, he played against Real Madrid in the Champions League and scored a dramatic goal to tie the game 1–1. He spent six successful years with CSKA Moscow. During his time there, he helped the team win the Russian Premier League three times and the Russian Cup once. He left the club in 2018 for family reasons.
Time in Greece with PAOK
On August 16, 2018, Pontus joined the Greek club PAOK FC. He signed a three-year contract. Unfortunately, in December 2018, he suffered a serious injury to his Achilles tendon. This meant he was out of action for many months. His contract with PAOK ended in August 2020.
Returning to IFK Göteborg and Retirement
After his time in Greece, Pontus returned to his first professional club, IFK Göteborg, in August 2020. He signed a contract to play until the end of the 2021 season. However, due to ongoing injury problems, Pontus decided to retire from professional football on July 14, 2021.
International Career
Pontus Wernbloom also proudly represented his home country, Sweden, in international football.
Playing for Sweden's Youth Team
He first played for the Sweden under-21 team in 2006, scoring a goal in his debut match.
Playing for the Senior National Team
Pontus made his debut for the Swedish national team on January 18, 2007, in a match against Ecuador. He earned his 50th cap (international appearance) for Sweden on March 29, 2016, in a game against the Czech Republic. Pontus played for Sweden in two major tournaments: UEFA Euro 2012 and UEFA Euro 2016. He retired from international duty after Euro 2016, having played 51 matches for his country.
Personal Life
Pontus Wernbloom married his girlfriend Nina in 2010. They welcomed their son, Mille, the following year. Pontus has also shared his thoughts on social issues and politics.
