Pontville is a small country town in Tasmania, Australia. It's located about 28 kilometers (17 miles) north of Hobart, the capital city. Pontville is part of the Brighton and Southern Midlands areas. In 2016, about 623 people lived there.

A Glimpse into Pontville's Past

Pontville was first planned by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1821. It was an early garrison town, which means it had soldiers stationed there. Convicts, or prisoners, helped build the important bridge over the Jordan River. This bridge is still a key part of the Midland Highway today.

During World War I and World War II, Pontville was home to a large army camp. This shows its importance in Australia's history. The town was officially named a locality in 1970.

Historic Buildings of Pontville

Pontville has some interesting old buildings. One famous one is Epsom House. It was built around 1831 and first served as a "coaching inn" called The Blacksmith's Arms. A coaching inn was like a hotel where people traveling by horse-drawn coaches could stop and rest.

Later, Epsom House became a store. In recent years, it has been restored and is now used as a place for events and performances. Famous music groups, like the Australian String Quartet and the Seraphim Trio, have performed there.

Pontville's Geography and Roads

The Jordan River flows through Pontville. This river is a natural feature of the area. The main road that goes through Pontville is the Midland Highway. This highway is also known as National Route 1. It helps connect Pontville to other towns and cities. Another road, Brighton Road (Route C195), starts in Pontville and goes south.
