Mangalore is a small, quiet area in the countryside of Tasmania, Australia. It's located in two local government areas: Brighton and Southern Midlands. Mangalore is about 7 kilometers (4 miles) north of the town of Brighton. In 2016, a count showed that 422 people lived here. You can find Mangalore along the Midland Highway, about 32 kilometers (20 miles) from Hobart, which is the capital city of Tasmania. It sits between the towns of Bagdad and Brighton.

Discovering Mangalore's Past

Mangalore officially became a recognized place, or 'gazetted locality,' in 1970. It was named after a city in India called Mangalore, which is in the state of Karnataka. A post office in Mangalore opened on August 1, 1891, but it closed down in 1969.
