Pooles of Wigan Ltd was a company that made tasty pies and puddings. It was located in Wigan, a town in Greater Manchester, England. Their delicious products were sold all over Northwest England. The factory was very big, about 300,000 square feet. It could make up to 100,000 pies and pastries every hour!

The Story of Pooles Pies

Pooles Pies began a long time ago in 1847. It was started by a woman named Margaret Poole in Liverpool. Later, a famous businessman named Dave Whelan bought the company. He was also the owner of JJB Sports and the chairman of Wigan Athletic F.C..

In March 2012, Dave Whelan sold Pooles Pies. The new owner was Neil Court-Johnston. He had worked for other pie companies before, like Holland's Pies. In 2013, Pooles Pies became part of a bigger group called Country Style Foods. Two years later, in 2015, another pie company, The Denby Dale Pie Company, also joined them.

Why Pooles Pies Closed

Sadly, the Pooles bakery stopped making pies in November 2018. This meant that about 50 people lost their jobs.

Pies at Football Games

Pooles Pies were very popular at football stadiums. They supplied their pies to Wigan Athletic. By August 2012, you could also buy their pies at Keepmoat Stadium. This is the home ground for Doncaster Rovers F.C..
