History of Holland's Pies
Holland's was started in 1851 by a father and daughter, John and Sarah Whittaker. They opened a sweet shop, called a confectioners, in Haslingden, Lancashire. In 1869, Sarah married Richard Holland. She then took over the business and changed its name to Walter Holland and Sons.
In 1907, the company moved to a much bigger bakery in Baxenden. From there, pies were delivered to local areas using horse and cart. The first delivery vans were used in 1927. Two years later, the company moved to its current location. By 1938, they had a fleet of twenty vans delivering pies all over the North West of England.
During World War II, there was sugar rationing. This meant Holland's stopped making cakes. Instead, meat pies became much more popular. After the war, in 1946, the company was sold to R.Gummer Ltd. Later, in 1972, Pork Farms bought Holland's. Then, in 1979, Northern Foods bought Pork Farms. This made Holland's a part of one of the biggest food companies in the United Kingdom.
Holland's Pies stayed with Northern Foods. Today, Holland's pies and puddings are sold in most chip shops in North West England.
