Pooleville is a small community located in Carter County, Oklahoma, in the United States. It sits to the west of the beautiful Arbuckle Mountains. Long ago, when this area was still a territory, the community was known by a different name: Elk.
At the time it was founded, the community was part of a larger area called Pickens County, Chickasaw Nation. This was before Oklahoma became a state.
What is Pooleville, Oklahoma?
Pooleville is what is called an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that don't have their own local government like a city or town does. Instead, it's usually managed by the county government.
The community's post office, which was first called Elk, opened on January 15, 1890. Later, on July 20, 1907, its name was officially changed to Pooleville. Today, mail for Pooleville uses the same ZIP Code, 73401, as the nearby city of Ardmore.
How Pooleville Got Its Name
In 1907, when Oklahoma officially became a state, a decision was made to rename the community of Elk. This was because mail for Elk, Oklahoma, kept getting mixed up with mail for another place called Elk City. To solve this problem, the community held a town meeting.
At this meeting, three possible new names were chosen. These names were sent to Washington, D.C., for approval. The names suggested were JJ Eaves, a well-known rancher; LO Majors, who owned the local general store; and Elzy R Poole, a pioneer rancher in the area.
After some time, Washington, D.C., announced that Elk, Oklahoma, would now be called Pooleville. The community was named after a person with the last name Poole. While some records say it was named for an Ardmore banker named E.S. Poole, it's more likely that the name honored Elzy R. Poole, the pioneer rancher. E.S. Poole was actually Edward Poole, Elzy R. Poole's son, and he was only 19 years old in 1907.
A Bit of History
Pooleville has a small but interesting place in history. On June 8, 1894, a historical event happened near here. A sheriff's group from Anadarko was in the area. They found and stopped a person named William M. Dalton. He was a brother of the famous Dalton brothers and was part of a group known as the Doolin-Dalton Gang.
