Poplar was a special area in London that had its own representative in the Parliament of the United Kingdom. This area is called a parliamentary constituency. The person elected to represent Poplar was called a Member of Parliament (MP). This MP would speak for the people of Poplar in the House of Commons.

Poplar's History in Parliament

Poplar first became a parliamentary constituency for the election in 1885. This meant people living in Poplar could vote for their own MP.

When Did Poplar's Constituency Change?

The Poplar constituency existed until the 1918 election. After that, it was split into new areas. Most of it became part of a new constituency called Poplar South. A small part also joined Bow and Bromley.

But Poplar's constituency came back! It was re-created for the 1950 election. It then continued until the February 1974 election. After 1974, parts of Poplar became part of the new Stepney and Poplar constituency.

Where Was Poplar?

The "boundaries" of a constituency show exactly which areas it covers. These boundaries can change over time.

Poplar's Borders from 1885 to 1918

From 1885 to 1918, Poplar was in an area called Middlesex. It was part of the Tower division in the East End of London. This area was a special part of the Tower Hamlets parliamentary borough.

In 1889, the Tower division became part of the County of London. Later, in 1900, the local government changed. The Poplar constituency then became part of the Metropolitan Borough of Poplar.

In 1965, the Metropolitan Borough of Poplar became part of the larger London Borough of Tower Hamlets in Greater London.
