It was created in the 1950s by students at the University of Helsinki. They were part of a student group called Satakuntalainen Osakunta. Even though it started in Helsinki, the city of Pori has really adopted the Porilainen. Now, it's seen as a kind of traditional food for that area. The name might even be a playful twist on the word purilainen, which means "burger" in Finnish!
