Pornainen (pronounced "POR-nah-ee-nen") is a small town, also called a municipality, in Finland. It is located in the Uusimaa region of Southern Finland. Pornainen is surrounded by other towns like Askola to the east, Mäntsälä to the north, Porvoo to the southeast, and Sipoo to the southwest. It is about 18 kilometers (11 miles) east of the town of Järvenpää.
Pornainen has a population of about 4,973 people (as of 31 December 2023). The total area of the municipality is about 150.09 square kilometres (57.95 sq mi). A small part of this area, about 3.59 km2 (1.39 sq mi), is water. This means there are about 33.94 inhabitants per square kilometre (87.9/sq mi) people living in each square kilometer.
The main center of Pornainen is a village called Kirveskoski. Around 2,000 people live there. It is also known as Pornainen's church village. The second largest village is Halkia, with about 500 residents. The official language spoken in Pornainen is Finnish.
Pornainen: The Hollywood of Finland
Pornainen has a cool nickname: "Hollywood of Finland"! This is because many movies, TV shows, and short films have been made there. Filmmakers have been using Pornainen as a filming location since the 1930s. In fact, people in the film industry once said it was the most photographed place in Finland.
The village of Laukkoski, which is part of Pornainen, was a popular summer spot for many famous people. These included the actress Regina Linnanheimo and writers like Mika Waltari and Juhani Aho.
