Port Kennedy is a suburb located south of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia. It is part of the City of Rockingham.

This area is built on Becher Point. Because of how the land was formed, it has a special group of wetlands called the Becher Wetland Suite. These wetlands are long and thin, not round. They formed in valleys between sand dunes, running parallel to the coast.

Some of these wetlands are now part of the Port Kennedy golf course. The rest are protected in the Port Kennedy Scientific Park. This park, along with Lake Walyungup to the east, is part of the Rockingham Lakes Regional Park. Special and rare plants, known as Sedgelands in Holocene Dune Swales, grow in these wet areas.

History of Port Kennedy

Port Kennedy gets its name from a spot in Warnbro Sound. This spot was first named in 1859 by John Septimus Roe. He was the Surveyor-General, meaning he was in charge of mapping the land.

Roe named it after Sir Arthur Edward Kennedy. Sir Arthur was the Governor of Western Australia from 1855 to 1862. A governor is the leader of a state or region.

On November 17, 1953, the area was officially called the Townsite of Port Kennedy. However, when the suburb was named in 1974, it was called Becher. This was after Point Becher, which is inside its boundaries. Later, on June 1, 1990, the suburb was renamed Port Kennedy.
