Port Sorell is a lovely town located on the north-central coast of Tasmania, Australia. It sits right next to a waterway also called Port Sorell, which connects to the Bass Strait. The town is about 20 kilometers east of Devonport. It is also very close to other popular spots like Shearwater and Hawley Beach.
Port Sorell is next to the Rubicon Estuary. This estuary is a very special place for birds. An organization called BirdLife International has named it an Important Bird Area. This is because many wading birds, especially pied oystercatchers, rely on this area.

A Look Back in Time
Early Days and Names
The local Aboriginal people originally called this area Panatana. The town was first a port for fishing and sealing. It was known as Burgess. However, in 1822, its name was officially changed to Port Sorell. This new name honored William Sorell, who was the Governor at the time.
Exploring the Land
In 1823, Governor Sorell wanted more people to move to Northern Tasmania. He sent Captain Charles Browne Hardwicke to explore the area. Hardwicke described the land to the west as "practically impenetrable and uninhabitable." This meant it was very hard to get through or live in.
Meeting the Locals
Captain Hardwicke also wrote about the Native Tasmanians living in the area. He said they were "numerous" and seemed "disposed to be friendly towards Europeans." This was different from his experience with Tasmanians further west. There, he described them as "extremely wild" and shy.
How Port Sorell Grew
Port Sorell could have become a much bigger town. However, large bushfires changed its path. After these fires, nearby Devonport grew into a major port instead. Today, Port Sorell is a popular holiday spot. Many people visit its beautiful north coast.
Population and Post Office
In 2021, the population of Port Sorell was 2,221 people. The first Post Office in Port Sorell opened on February 1, 1845, but it closed in 1863. The current Post Office started operating on July 3, 1944.
