History of Portis
The first people settled in Portis in 1871. They set up a trading post, which was like a small shop where people could buy and sell goods. In 1879, the town was officially planned out and given the name Bethany. A railroad called the Central Branch Railroad built a station there. Later, this railroad was sold to the Missouri Pacific Railroad. Since there was already another town named Bethany on their railroad system in Missouri, they decided to change the name of this station. The town was renamed Portis to honor Thomas Jefferson Portis, who was the Vice-President of the Missouri Pacific Railroad at the time.
