Postal codes in France facts for kids
The French postal code format helps people send mail to the right place in France. It looks like F-99999 or FR-99999. The first two numbers tell you which part of France, called a département, the address is in.
For big cities like Paris, Lyon, and Marseille, the last two numbers of the postal code show a smaller area called an arrondissement. This helps sort mail even more precisely within those cities.
This system is also used in many French overseas departments and territories, which are parts of France located outside Europe. However, it's not used for the French Southern and Antarctic Territories or Clipperton Island. Even Monaco, a small country next to France, uses the French postal code system, but its addresses start with MC-.
