Pound Puppies and the Legend of Big Paw is an animated musical comedy adventure movie from 1988. It's based on the popular Tonka toy line and the Hanna-Barbera Pound Puppies TV show.
The movie was directed by Pierre DeCelles. It features the voices of Brennan Howard, B.J. Ward, and Tony Longo. This film was special because it was the only animated movie made by Carolco Pictures. It was also the first animated movie released by TriStar Pictures.
The Legend of Big Paw was one of the last big animated movies of the 1980s that promoted a toy line. This was a common trend in cartoons back then. When it first came out in 1988, many critics and fans didn't like the movie. It also didn't make much money at the box office.

Discover the Story of Big Paw
This movie tells an exciting tale about the origin of "Puppy Power." Puppy Power is a special ability that lets humans understand what the Pound Puppies and Purries are saying.
The Bone of Scone's Ancient History
The story begins in the Dark Ages, around the year 958 AD. A young boy named Arthur and his dog, Digalot, find a magical stone. This stone holds the famous sword Excalibur and a special item called the Bone of Scone.
Arthur pulls the sword from the stone, becoming King Arthur. At the same time, Digalot pulls the Bone of Scone from the same stone. Suddenly, Arthur discovers that his dog can talk!
An evil knight named Sir McNasty sees all of this happen. He wants to get the Bone of Scone to take over the world. But the Bone is protected by a giant guardian named Big Paw.
The Bone in Modern Times
Fast forward to 1958. The Bone of Scone is now in a museum in an American city. Tammy and Jeff run the local pound. They announce that they will hold an adoption event for the puppies.
A descendant of the original Sir McNasty, also named McNasty, shows up. He pretends he wants to adopt the puppies. But the pups soon find out his evil plan.
McNasty wants to use his "Mean Machine" to turn the puppies into fierce guard dogs. Then, he plans to steal the Bone of Scone from the museum. With the Bone's power and his army of dogs, he hopes to conquer the world!
The Puppies' Great Escape
Two puppies, Collette and Whopper, manage to escape from McNasty's lab. They briefly meet up with their friends, the other Pound Puppies. But McNasty's henchmen, Lumpy and Bones, quickly grab them back.
The other Puppies chase after them. They almost fall into a cave full of rats, but the Purries (Pound Cats) save them. The Puppies and Purries keep searching for their friends.
They get stuck in a muddy area, but the legendary Big Paw rescues them. Big Paw agrees to help them find the Bone of Scone.
Stopping McNasty's Evil Plan
Meanwhile, McNasty's henchmen turn most of the puppies into guard dogs. Only Cooler avoids this fate. Big Paw brings Cooler and the Purries back to town. They must stop McNasty and his henchmen.
The evil trio is heading to the Pound in their truck. Big Paw and Cooler chase them all over town. They finally corner McNasty and his henchmen back at the museum.
The Mean Machine accidentally turns McNasty and his henchmen into good people. But not before all the puppies are turned back to normal! Big Paw and Nose Marie finally get the Bone of Scone back.
Puppy Power Lives On
At the end of the movie, Whopper, now grown up, is at the museum with his niece and nephew. The Bone of Scone is there for a special visit. Whopper introduces them to Big Paw, who they didn't believe was real.
Whopper tells them that as long as Big Paw is there to protect the Bone, Puppy Power will never be lost.
