Powers Allen Boothe (born June 1, 1948 – died May 14, 2017) was an American actor. He was well-known for playing strong and memorable characters in movies and TV shows. He won an important award called a Primetime Emmy Award for his acting. He was also nominated for two Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Powers Boothe won his Emmy Award for playing Jim Jones in the TV movie Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones (1980). He also played Cy Tolliver in the TV series Deadwood from 2004 to 2006. Later, he played President Noah Daniels in the show 24 in 2007. From 2012 to 2014, he was Lamar Wyatt in Nashville. He also appeared in the western series Hatfields & McCoys (2012).

You might also know him from his roles as "Curly Bill" Brocius in the western movie Tombstone (1993). He played Alexander Haig in the historical drama Nixon (1995). Some of his other famous movies include Red Dawn (1984) and Sin City (2005).

He also played Gideon Malick in the Marvel movie The Avengers (2012). He continued this role in the TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. from 2015 to 2016. Powers Boothe was also the voice of Gorilla Grodd. This supervillain appeared in the DC Animated Universe shows Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.

Early Life and Education

Powers Boothe was born on June 1, 1948, in Snyder, Texas. He was the youngest of three boys. His father, Merrill Vestal Boothe, was a rancher. His mother was Emily Boothe.

He went to Snyder High School, where he played football. He also acted in school plays. Powers was the first person in his family to go to college. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Texas State University. Then, he got a Master of Fine Arts degree in Drama from Southern Methodist University.

Acting Career Highlights

After college, Powers Boothe joined a theater group called the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. He performed in plays like Henry IV, Part 2. His first time acting on a New York stage was in 1974. He appeared in a play called Richard III. Five years later, he made his Broadway theater debut in the play Lone Star.

Powers Boothe became widely known in 1980. He played Jim Jones, a cult leader, in the TV movie Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones. Critics praised his performance. Time magazine said he captured all the "charisma and evil" of Jim Jones. Boothe won an Emmy Award for this role. He won against famous actors like Henry Fonda. At the time, many actors were on strike. Powers Boothe was the only actor to attend the awards show. He said it was either the bravest or dumbest moment of his career.

Powers Boothe married his college girlfriend, Pam Cole, in 1969. They stayed married until he passed away. They had two children, a daughter named Parisse and a son named Preston.

Death

Powers Boothe died in Los Angeles on May 14, 2017. He was almost 69 years old. He passed away from pancreatic cancer. His body was buried in Deadwood Cemetery in Texas.
