History of Poynette
Poynette got its name from an interesting mistake! The village was named after a person called Pierre Paquette (1796–1836). He was an early fur trader and one of the first settlers in south-central Wisconsin.
When people applied to open a post office in the area, Paquette's name was misread. It looked like "Poynette" instead of "Paquette." So, the post office was accidentally named "Poynette." Later, the entire village took its name from this post office. The community officially became a village in 1892.
