A Look at Prado del Rey's History
Ancient Times: Early Humans and Romans
People have lived in the area around Prado del Rey for a very long time. Scientists have found signs of human life dating back to the Paleolithic period. This was a time when early humans used stone tools.
Later, the area was home to a Roman city called Iptuci. An ancient writer named Pliny described Iptuci as a "Civitas". This meant it was an important city that could even make its own money! From the Roman period, we can still find old wall paintings and parts of ancient walls. There's also a special copper plate that talks about a treaty between Iptuci and another Roman town.
A Border Town in the Middle Ages
After the Romans, Prado del Rey became part of a changing border. It was located near the Nasrid kingdom of Granada. This border was often unstable, meaning control of the city frequently changed between different groups.
After a period when Arabic rulers were in charge, the city was conquered by Alfonso VII, a Christian king.
Refounding Prado del Rey
For a while, the area around Prado del Rey was not very populated. But in the 18th century, King Carlos III decided to refound the town. He wanted to bring new settlers to southern Andalusia.
A special plan was put in place to divide the land. About 189 settlers from nearby areas like the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park and Ronda came to live in Prado del Rey. This helped the town grow and become what it is today.
