History of Pratt's Bottom

What's in a Name?

The word "bottom" in the village's name means a valley or a hollow area. The "Pratt" part comes from a noble family named Pratt who used to live in this area a long time ago.

Village Changes Over Time

Pratt's Bottom was once part of an old area called the parish of Chelsfield in Kent. From 1896, it was part of the Bromley Rural District. In 1934, the parish system changed, and the village became part of the Orpington Urban District. Later, in 1965, Pratt's Bottom became part of Greater London. This is when it joined the London Borough of Bromley.

The Old Tollgate

For many years, a tollgate stood in the village. A tollgate was a barrier where people had to pay money to use the road. The small house where the toll collector lived was taken down in the 1930s. Even so, the tollgate is still an important symbol for the village. It's even shown on the new village sign on the green!

A Book About the Village

A local author named Sue Short wrote a book about the history of the village. It's called Pratts Bottom: A Journey Through Life.
