Preah Vihear (Khmer: ព្រះវិហារ, meaning 'sacred sanctuary') is a province in Cambodia. It is located in the northern part of the country. This province shares borders with Thailand and Laos to the north. To its west are Oddar Meanchey and Siem Reap. To the south is Kampong Thom, and to the east is Stung Treng. The capital city of Preah Vihear province is also called Preah Vihear.

About Preah Vihear Province

The province gets its name from the famous Prasat Preah Vihear temple. This ancient temple is a very important historical site. The Dângrêk Mountains are in the northern part of the province. These mountains form part of the border between Cambodia and Thailand.

Preah Vihear is one of nine provinces that are part of the Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve. This reserve is a special area that protects nature and wildlife. In 2016, Preah Vihear recorded the highest temperature ever in Cambodia. It reached 42.6 degrees Celsius (108.7 degrees Fahrenheit).

How Preah Vihear is Organized

Preah Vihear province is divided into different areas to help manage it. It has seven main districts and one municipality (a city area). These larger areas are then split into 51 smaller communities called communes. This system helps the local government serve the people living in each part of the province.
