After high school, Burgess went to the University of Michigan. He played in 46 games for the Michigan Wolverines. He started 20 of those games. In his junior year (2005) and senior year (2006), he was recognized. He earned an honorable mention for the All-Big Ten Conference team.

Professional Football Journey

Playing for the Baltimore Ravens (First Time)

The Baltimore Ravens chose Prescott Burgess in the 2007 NFL draft. He was the 207th player picked overall. He played in his first eight games for the Ravens. During this time, he made four tackles. However, he got a hip injury and was placed on injured reserve in November.

He missed the entire 2008 season. This was because he broke his forearm and was again placed on injured reserve. In 2009, Burgess played in the first two games for the Ravens. He made two tackles before moving to another team.

Time with the New England Patriots

On September 22, 2009, Burgess was traded to the New England Patriots. He was not active for their third game. A few days later, on September 28, he was waived by the Patriots. The trade deal meant the Ravens would only get something if Burgess played active games for the Patriots. Since he didn't, the Ravens received no compensation.

He was then re-signed to the Patriots' practice squad on September 30. This happened just before their game against the Ravens. This move meant the Ravens could not sign him back from the Patriots' practice squad.

Back with the Baltimore Ravens (Second Time)

On October 5, 2009, the day after playing the Patriots, the Ravens signed Prescott Burgess again. They took him from the Patriots' practice squad. He replaced Brendan Ayanbadejo, who was injured.

Burgess continued to play as a backup for the Baltimore Ravens in 2009 and 2010.

On September 3, 2011, the Ravens released Burgess during their final team cuts. However, they re-signed him on September 28. This happened when Ravens cornerback Dominique Foxworth was placed on injured reserve. Burgess played in one game but did not record any statistics.

He was waived again on October 4, 2011. This was after the Ravens signed cornerback Bryan McCann. But he was re-signed once more on October 18. On November 2, 2011, he was placed on injured reserve. The team then signed Edgar Jones as a replacement. He was taken off injured reserve on December 3, 2011, and immediately released from the team.

Even though he did not play much defense for the Ravens, Prescott Burgess became known for his special teams play. He was one of their top tacklers on that unit.
