Presque Isle is a small unincorporated community located in Vilas County, Wisconsin, in the United States. An unincorporated community means it's a recognized place, but it doesn't have its own separate local government like a city or village.
You can find Presque Isle about 32.5 miles (52.3 km) northwest of Eagle River. It's also very close to the Michigan state line, only about 1 mile (1.6 km) south. Presque Isle even has its own post office with the ZIP code 54557.
The Story of Presque Isle's Name
In 1905, a man named J.J. Foster built a lumber mill here. This mill was next to a pond at the start of the Presque Isle River. The area sits on a big hill that is part of the Continental Divide. This means water from here flows north towards Lake Superior.
Foster first named the community "Fosterville" after himself. Then, in 1910, William S. Winegar bought the mill. The town was renamed "Winegar" in his honor.
The lumber mill eventually closed in 1933. After that, the State of Wisconsin used the old mill grounds to create ponds for raising Walleye fish. In 1959, the town changed its name one last time to "Presque Isle." This new name matches the larger area, or township, around it, which covers about 77 square miles (200 square kilometers).
Today, Presque Isle is home to important community buildings. These include the Presque Isle Community Center, the Presque Isle Fire Department, and the Presque Isle Community Library.
