The Prime Minister of Bulgaria (Bulgarian: Министър-председател на България) is the main leader of the government in Bulgaria. Think of them as the boss who helps run the country day-to-day. This person is usually the head of a group of political parties working together in Bulgaria's parliament. The parliament is called the National Assembly. The Prime Minister also leads the group of top government officials, known as the cabinet. Sometimes, the President of Bulgaria chooses a Prime Minister to lead a temporary government. This happens when a new government needs to be formed. The current Prime Minister is Rosen Zhelyazkov. He has been serving in this role since January 16, 2025.

What a Prime Minister Does

The Prime Minister of Bulgaria has many important jobs. They are in charge of making sure the government works well. This includes leading the cabinet, which is a team of ministers. Each minister is responsible for a different area, like education or health.

Leading the Government

The Prime Minister guides the country's policies. They work on plans for the economy, social issues, and foreign relations. They also represent Bulgaria on the world stage. This means meeting with leaders from other countries.

Working with Parliament

The Prime Minister often leads the biggest group of politicians in the National Assembly. This group is usually a coalition of different parties. The Prime Minister needs the support of the National Assembly to pass new laws.

Appointing Ministers

The Prime Minister chooses the people who will be ministers in the cabinet. These ministers help carry out the government's plans. The Prime Minister makes sure everyone works together.

How a Prime Minister is Chosen

In Bulgaria, the Prime Minister is usually the leader of the political party or group that wins the most seats in the National Assembly. After an election, the President asks this leader to try and form a government.

Forming a Government

The chosen leader must get enough support from other politicians. They need to show they can lead a stable government. If they succeed, the National Assembly votes to approve them as Prime Minister.

Caretaker Governments

Sometimes, it's hard to form a stable government. In these cases, the President of Bulgaria might appoint a "caretaker government." This is a temporary government led by a Prime Minister chosen by the President. Their job is to keep things running until a new, permanent government can be formed.

History of the Prime Minister Role

The role of Prime Minister in Bulgaria began a long time ago. It was first created on April 16, 1879. The very first Prime Minister was Todor Burmov.
