Prince Charles of Luxembourg (full name: Charles Jean Philippe Joseph Marie Guillaume) was born on 10 May 2020. He is the first child of Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie. Prince Charles was born at the Grand Duchess Charlotte Maternity Hospital in Luxembourg City.
He is currently second in line to become the next ruler of Luxembourg, right after his father. Many expect him to become Grand Duke Charles I, just as his grandfather became Grand Duke Henri I. His birth was celebrated with a special 21-gun salute at Fort Thungen in Kirchberg. This is a traditional way to honor important royal births.
Early Life and Baptism
Before Prince Charles was born, his mother, Princess Stéphanie, announced her pregnancy on 6 December 2019. Charles was born on 10 May 2020, at 5:13 CET. At the time, his paternal grandfather, Grand Duke Henri, was the reigning Grand Duke.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa first met their new grandson through a video call. This showed how much the world had changed during that time.
Prince Charles was officially baptised on 19 September 2020. The ceremony took place at the beautiful Abbey of St. Maurice and St. Maurus of Clervaux in Luxembourg. His godparents are his maternal aunt, Countess Gaëlle de Lannoy, and his paternal uncle, Prince Louis of Luxembourg.
After his first birthday on 10 May 2021, the Luxembourg Post released a special set of postage stamps. These stamps celebrated Prince Charles's first twelve months of life. On 27 March 2023, Prince Charles became an older brother when his younger sibling, Prince François, was born.
Future Role
Prince Charles is set to become the Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg on 3 October 2025. This will happen when his grandfather, Grand Duke Henri, steps down from his role. This event is known as an abdication. After his grandfather's abdication, Prince Charles's father will become the new Grand Duke of Luxembourg. This means Charles will be next in line to rule after his father.
