Early Life and Education
Prince Charles grew up in Luxembourg. However, when World War II started and Germany invaded in May 1940, his family had to leave the country for safety. They traveled to Portugal, then to the United States, and finally settled in Canada.
While in Canada, Prince Charles finished his high school studies. After the war ended, he continued his education in Louvain, Belgium. He also attended the Royal Military Academy in Aldershot, England, which is a famous military school.
Career and Family Estate
After finishing his studies, Prince Charles returned to Luxembourg. He worked on important national issues, helping with the country's economy and social well-being.
He also inherited a large property in Italy called Villa Pianore. This estate had been owned by his father's family, the Bourbon-Parmas, for a long time.
Marriage and Children
Prince Charles married Joan Dillon on March 1, 1967, in England. Joan was the daughter of C. Douglas Dillon, who was a U.S. Treasury Secretary.
At the time, it was unusual for a prince from Luxembourg's royal family to marry someone who wasn't also royalty. So, Prince Charles's brother, Grand Duke Jean, issued a special rule to allow their marriage to be officially recognized as part of the royal family's line.
