Jean d'Orléans (born September 4, 1874, died August 25, 1940) was a French prince. He was also known as the Duke of Guise. Jean was the youngest son of Prince Robert, Duke of Chartres. His great-grandfather was Louis Philippe I, who was once the King of the French. Jean's mother was Princess Françoise of Orléans. Some people believed he should have been the king of France, calling him "Jean III."
Jean d'Orléans: A Royal Life
In 1926, Jean's cousin, Prince Philippe, Duke of Orléans, passed away. Philippe was also a claimant to the French throne. After Philippe's death, Jean's supporters recognized him as the new claimant. They called him "Jean III."
Jean was interested in history and old artifacts. He and his family lived on a large farm in Rabat, Morocco. Because of an old law from 1886, Jean and his oldest son were not allowed to enter France. This law was made to keep certain royal families, like the one Jean belonged to, from returning to power.
Jean passed away in Larache, Morocco, in 1940. His only son, Henri, Count of Paris, then became the next claimant to the French throne.
Jean's Family and Marriage
In 1899, Jean married his first cousin, Princess Isabelle of Orléans. She was the younger sister of Prince Philippe, Duke of Orléans, who was mentioned earlier.
Jean and Isabelle had four children:
- Isabelle d'Orléans (1900–1983). She married Bruno, Count of Harcourt in 1923. Later, she married Prince Pierre Murat in 1934.
- Françoise d'Orléans (1902–1953). She married Prince Christopher of Greece in 1929. Christopher was the son of George I of Greece. Françoise and Christopher had a son named Prince Michael of Greece.
- Anne d'Orléans (1906–1986). She married Amedeo, 3rd Duke of Aosta in 1927.
- Henri d'Orléans, Count of Paris (1908–1999). He married Princess Isabelle of Orléans-Braganza.
