Élisabeth Philippine Marie Hélène de France (born May 3, 1764 – died May 10, 1794), known as Madame Élisabeth, was a French princess. She was the youngest sister of King Louis XVI. Élisabeth was also called a "Granddaughter of France" because her father was the son of the king.

During the French Revolution, she chose to stay with her brother, King Louis XVI, and his family. She was executed in Paris during a very difficult time known as the "Reign of Terror".

Early Life in Versailles

Élisabeth was the youngest child of the Dauphin and Dauphine of France. A Dauphin was the title for the heir to the French throne. She was born in the famous Palace of Versailles while her grandfather, King Louis XV, was still ruling.

Élisabeth grew up at the royal palace. She was very close to her older sister, Clotilde. Both sisters were raised together by Madame de Marsan, who was in charge of their education.

Hobbies and Interests

Princess Élisabeth was a very skilled horse rider. She also loved art and enjoyed drawing. Some of her drawings can still be seen today in the museum at the Château de Versailles.

In 1774, her grandfather, King Louis XV, passed away. Her older brother then became the new king, known as Louis XVI.

Devotion and Loyalty

Élisabeth was a very religious person. She was also extremely loyal and devoted to her brother, King Louis XVI. She decided not to get married so that she could stay in France and be near her family.

In 1777, there was a suggestion for her to marry Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor. He was the son of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria and the brother of her sister-in-law, Queen Marie Antoinette. However, Élisabeth politely refused the marriage, and her brother the King agreed with her decision.

The French Revolution

During the French Revolution, the royal family faced many dangers. Élisabeth chose to remain with her brother and his family, even as the situation became more and more dangerous. She was arrested along with them.

Élisabeth was executed during the French Revolution's "Reign of Terror." This was a period when many people were arrested and executed. She was first buried in a cemetery in Paris called Cimetière des Errancis. Later, her body was moved to the Catacombs of Paris.
