Future Queen: Constitutional Status
The rules for who becomes king or queen in Norway changed in 1990. This change means that the oldest child, whether a boy or a girl, will inherit the crown. However, it kept the Crown Prince ahead of his older sister, Princess Märtha Louise. This new rule applied to their children. So, Princess Ingrid Alexandra has been second in line to the throne since she was born. Only her father is ahead of her. Because of this change, her younger brother, Prince Sverre Magnus, born in 2005, is behind her in the line of succession. Princess Ingrid Alexandra is expected to become Norway's first female monarch since Queen Margaret. Queen Margaret ruled Norway, Denmark, and Sweden from the late 1380s until 1412.
