Princess Ingrid Alexandra started kindergarten in April 2006. She then began elementary school on 19 August 2010, at Jansløkka School. This was a local public school that her half-brother also attended. Her parents wanted her to have a normal childhood. They hoped she could make friends and have some privacy from public attention.

In June 2014, the royal family announced that Ingrid Alexandra would move to the private English-language Oslo International School. Her parents wanted her to become fluent in English. Later, she transferred to Uranienborg School in Oslo to finish her middle school education. She was also part of the student council there.

In the fall of 2020, she began high school at Elvebakken Upper Secondary School in Oslo. She graduated in April 2023. After graduating, Ingrid Alexandra worked as a school assistant and environmental worker at Uranienborg School.

Princess Ingrid Alexandra began her 12 months of military service on 17 January 2024. She joined the Engineer Battalion in Brigade Nord. She was one of many young Norwegians chosen for mandatory military service that year. She trained at Skjold camp and used her second name, Alexandra, as her surname during her service. After basic training, she became a combat engineer. She serves as a gunner on a CV-90 infantry fighting vehicle.

Royal Duties and Hobbies

On 19 June 2010, Ingrid Alexandra was a bridesmaid at the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden. In December 2012, she took part in a TV interview with her father. This interview was to help Environmental Agents, a children's environmental group.

She often takes part in traditional celebrations, like Constitution Day. She also attends the famous ski jumping tournament at Holmenkollen in Oslo.

On 4 May 2015, Ingrid Alexandra named a new lifeboat called Elias. This was her first official royal duty. Her grandfather, the King, joined her, and she became the boat's godmother. On 19 May 2016, the Princess Ingrid Alexandra Sculpture Park opened at the Palace Park. This park has sculptures made for children and by children. She helps choose the designs from drawings sent in by schoolchildren across Norway. In 2018, she gave a tour of the park to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge during their visit to Norway.

On 12 February 2016, Ingrid Alexandra and her grandfather took part in the opening ceremony of the 2016 Winter Youth Olympics in Lillehammer. The King declared the Games open, just as he did in 1994. The Princess lit the cauldron, just like her father did 22 years before.

On 17 November 2018, Princess Ingrid Alexandra named the research ship Kronprins Haakon. The ship was named after her father. She spoke about her interest in the ocean and climate change. She said the ship would bring "new and crucial knowledge about the polar areas, about the oceans and about climate change."

On 20 January 2022, Ingrid Alexandra visited the three main parts of the Norwegian government. These were the Storting (Parliament), the Supreme Court, and the office of the prime minister. These visits were part of her activities before her 18th birthday. Her father, Crown Prince Haakon, did the same when he turned 18.

On her 18th birthday, 21 January, she attended a meeting of the Council of State. She was with Crown Prince Haakon and King Harald. She also received congratulations from many Norwegian officials at the Royal Palace. Cannon salutes were fired at noon to celebrate her birthday.

Future Role as Queen

The Constitution of Norway was changed in 1990. This change meant that the oldest child would inherit the crown, no matter if they were a boy or a girl. This rule applied to the children of Crown Prince Haakon and Princess Märtha Louise.

Because of this change, Princess Ingrid Alexandra has been second in the line of succession to the Norwegian throne since she was born. Only her father is ahead of her. Her status was not changed when her brother, Prince Sverre Magnus, was born in 2005. Princess Ingrid Alexandra is expected to become Norway's first female monarch since Queen Margaret. Queen Margaret ruled Norway, Denmark, and Sweden from the late 1380s until 1412.

Princess Ingrid Alexandra is a member of the Norwegian Royal House. This includes her parents and grandparents. Her family belongs to the House of Glücksburg.
