History of Princeton

Before European-American settlers arrived, the Colus Indians lived in this area. The first European-American settler near Princeton was John S. Williams. He was sent by Thomas Larkin, who was the American Consul to Mexico. Larkin's children received a large land grant of 44,364 acres in 1844. Williams built a special type of house called an adobe in 1847. This house was near an old Patwin village called Chah’ de’-he, close to Princeton. He started a very successful cattle ranch there.

The first building in the town of Princeton was a roadhouse called the Sixteen-Mile House, built in 1851. In the 1870s, growing grain became very popular and successful in the region. Princeton became an important place because it had a grain warehouse. Farmers could bring their grain here to be shipped by boat to bigger markets down the river. By 1897, Princeton was a small town with about 250 people. It had several businesses, including a bank, a hotel, and a grocery store.

For almost 130 years, Princeton had a working ferry. This ferry helped people travel across the Sacramento River to the community of Afton. However, officials in Glenn County closed the ferry in 1986. They were worried about safety and how much it cost to keep it running. The ferry service started again for a short time in 1988. People had to pay a 50-cent fee to help with maintenance costs. But the ferry was finally closed for good sometime in the late 1990s. You can still find the remains of the ferry and its dock.

Today, Princeton is perhaps best known as the home of Farmers Brewing Company. This company makes craft beers and sells them in the region.
