The first people known to settle in the Princeton area were two brothers, Giles and Haswell Pineo, around 1836. By 1838, the area, then called Elizabeth City, had its first store. There was also a ferry to cross the nearby Wapsipinicon River.

The city we know as Princeton was officially planned in 1852. It became an incorporated city in 1860. That same year, train service to Chicago began, connecting Princeton to a bigger city. Samuel Porter was the first mayor, elected in 1858. At that time, fewer than 500 people lived there.

For many years, two main businesses were important to Princeton. One was Farmers Savings Bank, which started in 1908. The other was Boll's General Store, founded by Henry "Heinie" Boll in 1922. Farmers Savings Bank is now part of Blackhawk Bank & Trust. Boll's Store closed in 1997, and its building is now the Community Center.

Education for children in the area started simply. First, they learned in a log cabin, then in a converted barn. In 1866, a stone building became the school. Princeton joined the North Scott Community School District in 1956. Today, students attend Virgil Grissom Elementary School, which opened in 1967.

Churches have been a part of Princeton for a long time. Methodist and Presbyterian churches started holding services in 1840. Lutherans began services in 1852. Today, Zion Lutheran Church and Princeton Presbyterian Church serve the community. They are part of a group of churches that work together in the area.
