The Pristimantis unistrigatus, also known as the striped robber frog, is a type of frog. It belongs to the frog family called Strabomantidae. You can find these frogs living in the Andean valleys, stretching from southern Colombia down to central Ecuador.

What Does the Striped Robber Frog Look Like?

These frogs are quite small. Adult male frogs are about 15 to 29 millimeters (0.6 to 1.1 inches) long. Female frogs are a bit bigger, measuring 23 to 39 millimeters (0.9 to 1.5 inches) long.

Body Features

A female frog's head is wider than her body. For males, their head is usually the same width or a little narrower than their body. Their snout, which is like their nose area, looks rounded from the side.

Frogs have an eardrum, called a tympanum. You can see it, but it's not super clear. It's partly hidden by a fold of skin near its ear. The tips of their fingers and toes have special discs. These discs help them grip surfaces.

Colors and Patterns

Striped robber frogs come in many different colors. The most common color is light brown. They often have a darker triangle shape between their eyes. They might also have brown spots on their back that look like "V" shapes.

Some frogs are light brown but have a thin, cream-colored stripe down their back. Other frogs are striped with different shades of tan, medium brown, and dark brown lines. Male frogs have a special pouch under their chin called a vocal sac. They use this to make sounds.

Frog Calls

When a male frog wants to attract a mate, he makes a special sound. His call is a hollow "click" sound.

Where Do These Frogs Live?

The striped robber frog lives in the Colombian Massif in southern Colombia. This includes areas like the Putumayo and Nariño Departments. They also live in the valleys between the Andes mountains in Ecuador. You can find them as far south as the Chimborazo Province.

Where Do Striped Robber Frogs Live?

Pristimantis unistrigatus is a common frog species. They live in many different open places. This includes grassy areas, farms, and even ditches. You can also find them in bushes, crop fields, and at the edges of forests. Some even live in cities! They can be found high up in the mountains, from 2,200 to 3,400 meters (7,200 to 11,200 feet) above sea level.

Daily Habits

During the day, these frogs like to hide. They often hide under things on the ground. Sometimes, they hide inside bromeliad plants that grow on trees. At night, they become active. They move around on plants and on the ground, looking for food.

Protecting These Frogs

The biggest danger to these frogs is pollution from farm chemicals. Luckily, many of the places where they live are protected areas. This helps keep them safe.
