Early Life and Education
Priyanka Gandhi was born in Delhi on 12 January 1972. Her parents are Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi. She is the younger of their two children. Her older brother, Rahul Gandhi, is also a member of Parliament.
Her grandmother was Indira Gandhi, who used to be the Prime Minister of India. Her great-grandfather was Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister.
Priyanka went to Welham Girls' School in Dehradun. Later, for safety reasons, she and her brother were taught at home. She then went to the Convent of Jesus and Mary, Delhi. She earned a bachelor's degree in psychology. In 2010, she also got a master's degree in Buddhist studies.
In 1997, Priyanka married Robert Vadra, a businessman from Delhi. They have two children together.
Political Journey
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra often visited the areas of Rae Bareilly and Amethi. She talked directly with the people living there. In the 2004 Indian general election, she helped manage her mother's election campaign. She also helped her brother Rahul Gandhi with his campaign.
During the 2007 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, she focused on ten areas in Amethi and Rae Bareilly. She worked to solve disagreements among party members.
Getting Started in Politics
Even before she officially joined politics in 2019, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was active in election campaigns. She helped her mother and brother during both national and state elections. She was well-known and liked in Rae Bareilly and Amethi. People in Amethi even had a slogan: "Amethi ka Danka, Bitiya Priyanka," which means "The call from Amethi is for Priyanka."
Official Political Debut
On 23 January 2019, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra officially entered politics. She was made the General Secretary of the AICC for the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh. Later, she became the General Secretary for the entire state of Uttar Pradesh.
In October 2021, the police in Uttar Pradesh stopped her twice. Once, she was going to Lakhimpur Kheri to meet families after some clashes. She was held for over 50 hours. Another time, she was going to Agra to meet a family. The police stopped her, saying that large gatherings were not allowed.
2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra started the Congress party's election campaign in Uttar Pradesh on 23 October 2021.
In January 2022, she and her brother Rahul released the Congress party's plan for the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election. This plan focused on helping young people and women. It also promised that 40% of the election spots would go to women.
She started a campaign called "Ladki hoon, Lad Sakti hoon," which means "I am a girl, I can fight." This campaign was about empowering women and getting them involved in politics. On International Women's Day, she held a big rally in Lucknow. Many women from all over the state joined the rally.
Even with all her efforts, the Congress Party did not do well in the state elections. They won only 2 out of 403 assembly seats. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra later resigned from her role as General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh in December 2023.
After the election results, she joined a protest against rising prices and inflation on 5 August 2022. She was briefly stopped by the Delhi Police during this protest.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra worked hard during the 2024 Indian general election. She took on a bigger role within the Congress party. She then announced that she would run for election herself. She became the party's candidate for the Wayanad bypoll. She ran to take over from her brother, Rahul Gandhi, who had also been a Member of Parliament for Wayanad.
She won the election by a large number of votes, with a margin of 410,931 votes. She will now serve in Parliament alongside her mother, Sonia Gandhi, and her brother, Rahul Gandhi. She and her brother are the only brother-sister pair serving together in the 18th Lok Sabha.
