Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, born on January 12, 1972, is an important Indian politician. She is a member of the Lok Sabha (India's Parliament) representing Wayanad, Kerala. She has held this position since November 2024. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is also a general secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), which is part of the Indian National Congress party.

She comes from the well-known Nehru–Gandhi family, which has many famous politicians. She is also a trustee for the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation.

Early Life and Schooling

Priyanka Gandhi was born in Delhi on January 12, 1972. Her parents are Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi. She has an older brother named Rahul Gandhi, who is also a Member of Parliament.

Priyanka Gandhi is the granddaughter of Indira Gandhi, who was a former Prime Minister of India. Her great-grandfather was Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister.

She went to Welham Girls' School in Dehradun until 1984. After that, she and her brother Rahul moved to day schools in Delhi for safety reasons. They were even homeschooled for a while after their grandmother, Indira Gandhi, was assassinated. Later, she attended the Convent of Jesus and Mary, Delhi. She earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Jesus and Mary College, New Delhi. In 2010, she completed a master's degree in Buddhist studies.

In 1997, Priyanka Gandhi married Robert Vadra, a businessman from Delhi. After her marriage, she started using the name Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. They have two children together.

Political Journey

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has always been involved in politics, even before she officially joined. She often visited the areas of Rae Bareilly and Amethi. These are important places for her family's political history. She would talk directly with the people living there.

In the 2004 Indian general election, she helped manage her mother's election campaign. She also helped her brother Rahul Gandhi with his campaign. During the 2007 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, she focused on ten specific areas in Amethi and Rae Bareilly. She worked to solve disagreements among party members there.

Getting Started in Politics

Even though she didn't officially join politics until 2019, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was very active in election campaigns. She supported her mother and brother in many elections. Her visits to Rae Bareilly and Amethi made her well-known and popular there. People in Amethi even had a slogan: "Amethi ka Danka, Bitiya Priyanka," which means "The call from Amethi is for Priyanka."

On January 23, 2019, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra officially entered politics. She was appointed as the General Secretary of the AICC for the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh. Later, on September 11, 2020, she became the General Secretary for the entire state of Uttar Pradesh.

In October 2021, she was stopped by the police in Uttar Pradesh twice. The first time was when she visited Lakhimpur Kheri. This was after a violent incident where several people died. She was held for over 50 hours. The second time, she was stopped on her way to Agra to meet a family. The police said there was a ban on gatherings.

Uttar Pradesh Elections 2022

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra started the Congress party's election campaign for Uttar Pradesh on October 23, 2021, in Barabanki.

In January 2022, she and her brother Rahul launched the Congress party's plan for the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election. This plan focused on helping young people and women. It also promised that 40% of the party's election candidates would be women.

She started a campaign called "Ladki hoon, Lad Sakti hoon" (I am a girl, I can fight). This campaign focused on empowering women and encouraging them to join politics. On International Women's Day, she led a rally in Lucknow, the state capital. Many women from all over the state joined this rally.

Despite her efforts, the Congress Party did not win many seats in the Uttar Pradesh elections. They won only 2 out of 403 assembly seats. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra resigned from her role as AICC General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh in December 2023.

After the election results, on August 5, 2022, she joined a protest against rising prices. She was briefly stopped by the Delhi Police during this protest.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra worked very hard during the 2024 Indian general election. She played a big role in the Congress party's organization. She then announced that she would run for election herself. She became the party's candidate for the Wayanad by-election in 2024. She ran to take over the seat from her brother, Rahul Gandhi.

She won the election by a large number of votes, with a margin of 4,10,931 votes. She now serves in Parliament alongside her mother, Sonia Gandhi, and her brother, Rahul Gandhi. They are the only brother-sister duo serving together in the 18th Lok Sabha.
